The New York Yankees are still trying to strengthen their infield, and are now looking to sign a player who can fill the void left by Gleyber Torres, who signed with the Detroit Tigers.
“It’s also a little hard to imagine the Yankees and Dodgers, who just faced off in the World Series, being trade partners this offseason,” wrote Sports Illustrated specialist Pat Ragazzo. “But the Yankees and Dodgers have made trades with each other in recent years: Joey Gallo for Clayton Beeter in 2022, and Victor Gonzalez and Jorbit Vivas for Trey Sweeney last winter.”
Although Jazz Chisholm Jr. could be moved from third to second base, the Manhattan Mules hope to leave him at third base and reinforce the team with another infielder, so the team has already started to ask about acquiring the services of Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux, according to heavy.com.
The 27-year-old was part of the 2024 Dodgers roster that won the World Series, and was selected in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft. The infielder has two years remaining on his contract, and in 2024 he hit .251 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs.
Passan’s report comes after Sports Illustrated reported that the Yankees have shown interest in making changes, and could prioritize Lux’s arrival in the New York infield, although the Seattle Mariners are said to have been “more aggressive in their pursuit of the current champion.”
“The Yankees could get Lux hoping to get the most out of him through a change of scenery and a low-risk acquisition,” Ragazzo added. “His left-handed bat would also help bring more balance to the Yankees’ lineup, who could decide to opt for a Minor League player to fill their infield gap. But bringing in a new face like Lux makes sense.”
“The Yankees are certainly a deeper team, but they’re not done. They continued to talk about Luis Arraez with San Diego and asked about Gavin Lux, whom the Dodgers could trade, to fill their vacant second base spot,” reported Jeff Passan, an analyst for MLB.
