Trump’s victory gives hope to Capitol assault defendants
The defendants in the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol are hoping for a presidential pardon when he returns to the White House. Just hours after the results were announced, lawyers for several of them feverishly filed appeals requesting postponement of their next hearing, including sentencing when they have already been found guilty.
Although their appeals have so far been systematically rejected, some of them say they can already feel the tide turning.
EU launches ‘urgent’ reform effort after Trump’s election
Economic reforms in the European Union have become “even more urgent” with the election of Donald Trump in the United States, warned Mario Draghi on Friday as he presented his proposals to the leaders of the Twenty-Seven at their summit in Budapest.
At the beginning of September, the former Italian Prime Minister published a report aimed at revitalizing growth in a Europe that is lagging behind the United States.
“The recommendations in this report were already urgent, given the economic situation we find ourselves in today. They have become even more urgent after the US elections,” he declared on his arrival in the Hungarian capital. “There is no doubt that Trump’s presidency will mark a big difference in relations between the United States and Europe,” he added.
After China, fear of new taxes on Cognac
Already threatened by devastating customs surcharges in China, the cognac industry, which is heavily dependent on exports, now fears it may be targeted in the United States, its leading market.
“We’ve just taken a big slap in the face from China, and now it’s the United States,” laments Sabine de Witasse, who 30 years ago took over one of the last family-run cognac estates still using a wood-fired boiler in the Charente.
“My main customer does almost all his business internationally, in China and the United States, so there are bound to be repercussions,” worries the producer, who works with a wine merchant who accounts for 80% of her sales.
Von der Leyen proposes to Trump to replace Russian gas with American gas
The President of the European Commission has proposed to Donald Trump that the USA supply more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU to replace Russian gas. “First of all, I think it’s very important to [il faut] discuss our common interests and then start negotiations,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
“Common interests are, for example – and this is something we touched on yesterday, without really discussing it in depth – everything to do with LNG. We still receive a lot of LNG from Russia, so why not replace it with American LNG, which is cheaper for us and lowers our energy prices?” she asked at a press conference following a European summit in Budapest.
The vote-sanction mechanism
Since Donald Trump’s 2016 victory ended Barack Obama’s eight-year reign in the White House, Republican and Democratic presidents have served just one four-year term. You have to go back to the end of the 19th century to find such alternation. Donald Trump’s election shows that, as in other countries, the incumbent’s bonus is now working less well, whereas in the United States, sitting presidents have often been re-elected, surfing on the authority of the office and the symbols of power of the world’s leading power.
Asia prepares for the “Trump shock
Some Asian countries are hoping to benefit from a new wave of factory relocations out of China in the face of Donald Trump’s promised massive tariffs, but they themselves could suffer from a trade war destabilizing the global economy. Asia, which contributes 60% of global growth according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), would be primarily affected by an aggressive policy from the American president-elect.
