The United States pays a high price for firearms. A study published Monday in Jama Pediatrics magazine reveals that states that had relaxed their weapons legislation experienced a strong increase in the number of deaths of children, mainly due to homicides and suicides. Between 2011 and 2023, more than 7,400 additional deaths related to weapons were registered compared to trends in previous decades.
This peak infant mortality by firearm arises, while the death of children due to road accidents, previously in mind, have decreased.
A surprising increase in 2010
It all started from a judgment of the Supreme Court in 2010: the second amendment of the Constitution, guaranteeing the right to bring weapons, could now be imposed on the states themselves. Consequence: Many states have chosen to soften their local laws.
