Fans are already buzzing… Five years after the release of Episode IX, Skywalker’s Ascension, a new Star Wars trilogy is in the works, reports the American trade media Deadline. Lucasfilm has entrusted the script and production of this new trilogy to Simon Kinberg, the man behind the franchise X-Men.
The producer, who will be accompanied by Lucasfilm director Kathleen Kennedy, has already worked on the Star Wars saga. He co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels (2014-2018), who was nominated for a Emmy Awardsand was hired as a consultant on The Force Awakens in 2015.
“The start of a new saga with new characters”
It remains to be seen whether these three films will be episodes X, XI and XII of the Skywalker saga. According to Varietythis new trilogy would mark “the beginning of a new saga with new characters, after Skywalker’s Ascension concluded the “Skywalker Saga” in nine chapters in 2019″.
This project adds to the long list of Star Wars projects planned by Disney and Lucasfilm, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and the long-awaited Skeleton Crew.
Fans will have to be patient, however, as Simon Kinberg is said to be “in the very early stages of development” for this trilogy, which still has no release date. In the meantime, they can console themselves with the cinema release of the next Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu by Jon Favreau, scheduled for May 20, 2026.
